Call to Speed Up Renewable Energy Implementation at COP27’s Energy Day

Energy Day at COP27

COP27, the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, is currently being held in Egypt in Sharm El-Sheikh.  Global parties are being urged to progress plans towards mitigating climate change, which includes moving more rapidly into implementing the renewable energy transition.

Energy is the theme for the day of the 15th of November at COP27.  “The science is clear, to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, global emissions need to be reduced by almost half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050…. Renewable energy is the driving force behind powering a safer future,” as stated by the UNFCC.

Hosting COP27 in Egypt provides a platform for climate change talks impacting Africa, as well as globally.  Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Egypt’s Minister of Environment said: “Egypt has been leading Africa in the combat against climate change since the Paris Agreement. Examples of such efforts are the birth of the African Renewable Energy Initiative and the African Adaptation Initiative.”

Solar PV is key to the energy transition, providing affordable, clean and renewable energy.  Part of the focus of the Energy thematic day at COP27 will be to “highlight the importance of innovation and technology in enabling the transition to low-carbon energy systems.”

Australia Has Marginal Increase on Climate Change Performance Index

Australia needs to do much more to progress towards net zero emissions, ranking 55 out of 63 countries on climate change performance.  Last year Australia performed last out of all countries.

Australia is still heavily reliant on fossil fuels.  Nicki Hutley from the Climate Council said: “Australia has gone from dead last to far from a pass, and despite the nation’s recent progress, there is no escaping just how far behind we are and how much catching up we’ve got to do.”

The Climate Change Performance Index is published by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and Climate Action Network International.

Ms Hutley is a councillor and economist and currently at the COP27 conference.  “Next year, Australia needs to have skyrocketed up this index and COP27 provides the ideal platform for us to get cracking. Minister Chris Bowen is now here at the conference in Egypt and as a start, he must commit to an end date for fossil fuels and increase support for vulnerable communities in our region and beyond. There is no time to lose.”

Commercial Rooftop Solar

Australia needs to take full advantage of our abundant sunshine and industry expertise in solar PV.  Australia has more than 3 million rooftop solar systems installed, which is the highest uptake of solar globally.  Yet many businesses have yet to adopt rooftop solar and benefit from clear, renewable energy and cost savings.

Ms Hutley said: “We know the costs of inaction are skyrocketing, and we know that making the most of Australia’s vast, untapped renewable energy potential is the path to Australia’s future economic prosperity.”

97% of commercial buildings have not yet installed solar, despite having ideal conditions for rooftop solar PV.  This is largely because these buildings are leased and businesses are not aware of products that mean they can install rooftop solar.  Solpod provides a unique solar solution, where business can hire our solar pods for a short time-frame or aligned to the length of the property lease.

Our prefabricated solar pods are rapidly installed, typically in less than one day.  They are not permanently fixed to the roof, and can be removed without disturbing the roof sheet or damaging the panels.

Our innovative Solpods have been developed by a team of Australian solar industry experts.  Our Solpods have been awarded:

2021 Start Up Energy Transition Top 100 Energy Start-Up

2020 Premier’s Design Awards Finalist, Product Design Category

2019 Most Innovative Solar Solution, Solar Cutters

2018-2020 Arena Grant Award
